Major Investment Positions Nautel for Future Success

Nautel held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday Dec 11, 2012, to launch an extensive upgrade to production equipment at its Bangor, Maine manufacturing facility.
The ceremony was attended by Bangor Mayor, Nelson Durgin, Nautel owners, Kevin Rodgers and George Waye (pictured from left to right), and all the Bangor staff. Updates to production equipment in the order of $500,000 include a new metal punch machine, which punches holes into sheets of metal used to produce Nautel’s transmitters, as well as a new 90-ton, eight-axis press brake, which bends the metal.
These improvements help improve efficiency and capacity – the punch press alone will increase the productivity of the fabrication shop by as much as 50 percent – and poise the company for significant future growth. Products made in Bangor include XR, NV and J1000 broadcast transmitters, navigational beacons and NOAA Weather Radio transmitters as well as the successful NX25 and NX50 AM. |

Plant manager Charlie Drillen explains, “We decided to upgrade aging equipment to allow us to address limitations in efficiency, capacity and production, and with this enhanced productivity we are better prepared to respond to market demands.”
“It also gives us greater flexibility to share or move work between locations. We gain in machine knowledge, shared tooling, machine programming and it also allows our engineering team to design products that can be made at either facility without having to consider machine limitations.” Decisions like this have allowed Nautel to nearly triple revenues and dramatically increase shipments in the past few years while maintaining the same factory footprints. |

“The Bangor facility provides a significant portion of Nautel’s overall manufacturing,” said Peter Conlon, Nautel President and CEO. “Our transmitters are all known for their redundancy, which ensures steady operation in a broadcast facility. With two manufacturing facilities in North America, Nautel also has redundancy in manufacturing, which ensures steady production and repair capabilities even in the event of a natural disaster or other event shutting down a plant.”
